Patrick Goddard

During his residency from August to December 2016, artist Patrick Goddard worked with Ravinder Atwal, from Barking, to explore the borough, considering local and national politics, class antagonism, feminism, witchcraft, and female subjugation in relation to feudal England.

A new short film Tune Into Sanity FM! was the culmination of his residency and their collaboration at The White House, and premiered at Eastbury Manor House in Barking in December 2016. The film starred self-proclaimed ‘modern day witch’, single parent and youth worker Ravinder as the film’s protagonist. Following Ravinder around her local haunts, as well as to Frieze Art Fair with Patrick, as he plays an accentuated version of himself ‘the artist’; this is the first of his works not to star actors. Tune Into Sanity FM! looks at the friction between shifting power relations involved in a middle class artist coming to work in a working class area, art’s role in regeneration and local residents agency in relation to this. 

Shot in his subversive, low-fi mockumentary style, Tune Into Sanity FM! is the final film in a trilogy by Patrick. The first two instalments are Gone to Croatan and Greater Fool Theory, each are connected by a loose concern for money and materialism.
